Matelea obliqua (Jacquin) Woodson. Common name: Northern Spinypod, Limerock Milkvine. Phenology: (Apr-) May-Sep (-Oct); Jun-Nov. Habitat: In forests, woodlands, or thickets over calcareous rocks. Distribution: PA west to OH, IN, and MO, south to w. NC, nw. GA (Jones & Coile 1988), nw. AL, and ne. MS.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate, widely heart-shaped with an abruptly tapered tip, 1 1/2-6 in. long.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in clusters of 10-50, on stalks from between leaf petiole pairs; buds long-conical; flowers rose to light maroon (rarely dark maroon, green or cream-colored), consisting of 5 ascending-spreading, narrow, pointed petals connected at the base, and a central "crown" containing the reproductive structures.

Fruits: Fruit a warty, oval to lance-shaped follicle.
