Horticultural Information
Intro: Erect perennial of rich bottomlands, prairies and marshes.
Stems: Stems stout, 4-angled, unbranched or with a few branches above, very hairy.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate (upper leaves sessile), lance-oval to oblong, to 5 in. long, coarsely toothed, with deeply etched veins, hairy; strong odor when crushed.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in conical terminal spikes, flowers blooming from bottom up; pale pink to whitish with dark pink spots, about 1/3 in. long, tubular, divided into 2 lips, the upper one consisting of 2 small, erect, horn-shaped lobes and the lower one consisting of a wide downward-spreading center lobe and 2 narrow lateral lobes; corolla covered with tiny, glandular hairs.
