Intro: Erect perennial of woodland borders and dry to somewhat moist woodlands and glades.
Stems: Stems solitary or several from a woody crown, slender, slightly zig-zagged, mostly smooth.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, mostly sessile, elliptic with somewhat pointed tips, to 5 in. long (lower leaves smaller), smooth to rough above.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in a widely branched, terminal cluster; heads to 1 in. wide and consisting of 5-9 well-spaced white ray florets encircling a center disk of pale yellow tubular flowers. Several series of green, narrow bracts surround the cup-shaped base of each head.
