Palafoxia texana A.P. de Candolle var. ambigua (Shinners) B.L. Turner & M.I. Morris. Common name: Texas Palafoxia. Phenology: Mar-Nov. Habitat: Calcareous, rocky or sandy sites, also in dry, disturbed areas. Distribution: W. LA west to s. TX and TAM, more coastal in distribution than var. texana.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: More research is needed on the distinctive nature of Palafoxia texana var. ambigua, which apparently lacks stipitate glandular phyllaries and has shorter pappus scales than P. texana var. texana. However, some gradation apparently occurs along the western margins of its overlap with the more inland P. texana var. texana.
