Distribution: Se. Maine west to Wisconsin, south to e. South Carolina, c. Georgia, se. Tennessee, and s. Missouri.

Taxonomy Comments: Nesom (2001a) discusses the distinctiveness of this taxon and its treatment as a species, rather than variety. We reject Freire et al.'s (2022) synonymization of "micradenium" and "helleri", as they provide no discussion or evidence for their decision.
