Balduina Nuttall. Honeycomb-head, Balduina.
A genus of 3 species, herbs, of se. North America.
ID notes: The common name alludes to the honeycomb-like texture of the receptacle, made up of connected receptacular bractlets which surround the achenes. This condition is diagnostic of the genus, and can be seen even when the plant is in flower by stripping the flowers from the receptacle. Superficially, the perennial species resemble some Helenium (particularly H. pinnatifidum and H. vernale), but these bloom months earlier. The punctate leaves are very distinctive.
