Habitat: Moist and nutrient-rich forests (alluvial, bottomland, slope, and cove forests). Distribution: NB and QC to MB, south to e. GA, sw. GA, Panhandle FL, AL, and TX.

Stems: Stems slender, branched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, on petioles with sheathing bases, divided into 3 oval or diamond-shaped, toothed leaflets that are 1 1/2-3 in. long (these sometimes further lobed) and smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in open, sparsely flowered umbels at top of stem and from upper leaf axils, white, minute, consisting of 5 tiny petals.

Fruits: Fruit a joined pair of blackish, very slender, ribbed seeds.
