Taxonomy Comments: Closely related to C. japonica Hasskarl of e. Asia, which has sometimes been subsumed within it.

Intro: Erect perennial of moist, nutrient-rich forests, such as alluvial, bottomland, slope and cove forests.
Stems: Stems slender, branched, smooth.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, on petioles with sheathing bases, divided into 3 oval or diamond-shaped, toothed leaflets that are 1 1/2-3 in. long (these sometimes further lobed) and smooth.

Flowers: Flowers in open, sparsely flowered umbels at top of stem and from upper leaf axils, white, minute, consisting of 5 tiny petals.
Fruits: Fruit a joined pair of blackish, very slender, ribbed seeds.
