Erythronium umbilicatum C.R. Parks & Hardin ssp. monostolum C.R. Parks & Hardin. Common name: Southern Appalachian Trout Lily. Phenology: Mar-May; Apr-Jun. Habitat: High elevation coves, slopes, and grassy balds, moist forests. Distribution: Ssp. monostolum is endemic to the high mountains of NC and TN; it approaches the VA border and should be sought, especially in the Grayson Highlands area. A puzzling population in n. AL may represent this taxon. There are apparently collections from n. GA (L. Chafin 217; 224; 244) representing this taxon (R. Oliver, pers. comm.; 2024).
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Plants at low elevations in n. AL ('Brasher's Trout-Lily') need additional study and may represent a new taxon (see Spaulding et al. 2023 for discussion). Colonial plants in the n. VA Blue Ridge similarly need additional study. E. umbilicatum ssp. monostolum is a diploid (2n = 24).
