Astragalus

not marked as a favorite taxon Astragalus lotiflorus W.J. Hooker. Common name: Lotus Milkvetch. Phenology: Mar-Jun. Habitat: Prairies, bluffs, wooded canyons, often on limestone or sandstone. Distribution: Minnesota, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia south to Texas and New Mexico.

ID notes: This species is unique in that it often forms cleistogamous and chasmogamous on the same plant at different times of the year. The cleistogamous flowers produce legumes that emerge directly from the base of the plant (Isely 1998).
