Eleocharis xyridiformis Fernald & Brackett. Habitat: Sink holes, ponds, lake margins, depressions, roadsides, ditches, various other wetlands. Distribution: SD s. through KS, MO, OK, TX. South into Mexico, and further westward to AZ and CA.
Origin/Endemic status: Sw. North America
Other Comments: See the discussion under Eleocharis macrostachya [Variant a] in Smith et al. (2002), for which the provisional acceptance here is based. Further clarification is also needed for variant B (here recognized as a finer concept of E. macrostachya) and the 4 variants described under Eleocharis palustris. Plants trending towards E. macrostachya in the far western portions of the flora should consider this taxon, although it may not be as broadly distributed.
