not marked as a favorite taxon Mentzelia nuda (Pursh) Torrey & A. Gray. Common name: Blazing-star. Phenology: Jun-Oct. Habitat: Prairies; eastwards in disturbed areas. Distribution: SD and MT south to TX, NM, and AZ; reported for se. MO and w. NC by Kartesz (2020).

ID notes: Similar to Mentzelia decapetala, but with smaller flowers.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Two varieties are sometimes recognized (see synonymy). Var. nuda is branched on the lower stem, and has flowers subtended by a solitary and entire bract. Var. stricta is unbranched low on the plant and has flowers subtended by several, toothed bracts.
