Comandra umbellata (Linnaeus) Nuttall var. pallida (A.P. de Candolle) M.E. Jones. Common name: Western Comandra, Western Bastard-toadflax. Phenology: May-Jul. Habitat: Dry upland forests and woodlands, glades, barrens, savannas, upland prairies. Distribution: MN, MB, NT, and YT south to nc. TX, NM, AZ, and n. Mexico (CHH, COA, SON).
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: The differences between the two taxa in our region seem adequate for species rank (Cronquist [1991] calls the varieties "well-marked"), but they allegedly "intergrade over a wide area in Ont., Sask., ND, SD, and NE… the zone of interfertility is narrow in the south becoming more extensive northward" (Great Plains Flora Association 1986).
