Yucca freemanii Shinners. Common name: Freeman's Yucca. Phenology: Apr-May. Habitat: Usually sandy soils in open pine and pine-hardwood forests with herbaceous understories. Distribution: Ne. TX, nw. LA, and se. AR.
ID notes: This species has long been included in synonymy with Yucca louisianensis or Yucca flaccida, but it can be identified by its later flowering period, fewer flaccid leaves per rosette, and smooth glabrous inflorescences that have a slightly greasy glaucous haze that can be wiped off or imprinted with fingerprints.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Other Comments: Because of its late blooming period when most yucca moths are no longer flying, most populations do not set seed. Late flying yucca moths and plants that regularly set seed are apparently only still extant in the TX counties along the Red River (E. Keith, pers. obs.).
