Hosta

*Hosta plantaginea (Lamarck) Ascherson. Common name: Fragrant Plantain-lily. Habitat: Widely planted as a shade ornamental, rarely persistent. Distribution: Native of China; rarely escaping from cultivation in NJ, PA, VA, and likely elsewhere.

Other Comments: This species is widely cultivated for its fragrant white flowers, which open in late afternoon or evening. This showy species was the first Hosta cultivated in Europe, starting in 1784, and shortly thereafter in the New World.
