Intro: Aquatic perennial of marshes, ponds and stream edges.
Stems: Stems underground.
Leaves: Leaves emergent, arising in a cluster from an underground stem, long-petiolate, oval, sometimes with a heart-shaped base, sharp-tipped, 2-8 in. long, smooth.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in an emergent, open, much-branched and many flowered panicle on a stalk arising from the underground stem; white; less than ¼ in. wide; consisting of 3 round petals, 3 green sepals visible between them, a central ring of green ovaries and 6--9 stamens.
Fruits: Fruit a tight cluster of tiny achenes.

plant sale text: This attractive and hardy bog plant is seen growing in marshes and along shorelines, emerging from slow-moving water. Many small flowers, each only about 1/8 inch across, are borne in large panicles. The flowers attract many pollinators. Each flower is replaced by a seedhead (technically a tight cluster of achenes) which keeps the showy look of the panicles well past the month of flowering. Its leaves grow in a basal rosette, about 1 foot in height.
