Intro: Erect, aquatic perennial of blackwater stream banks, sphagnum bogs, pocosins, beaver ponds.
Stems: Flowering stem (scape) and leaves arise from an underground stem.
Leaves: Leaves clustered basally and held above water surface on long petioles that may be 2-ridged; narrowly arrowhead-shaped with long, nearly linear basal lobes; 4-8 in. long; smooth.

Flowers: Flowers in 2--4 whorls of 3 flowers each, spaced along upper half of a scape held above the water surface; upper whorls of male flowers and lower whorls of female. Each flower white; about 1 in. wide; consisting of 3 spreading and rounded petals, 3 reflexed sepals, 15--25 bushy yellow stamens (male flowers) or a mounded, green compound ovary (female flowers).
Fruits: Fruit a brown, compact cluster of beaked achenes.
