Allium species 1. Common name: Savanna Onion. Phenology: Late Aug-early Oct; late Sep-Nov. Habitat: Wet savannas over coquina limestone (marl). Distribution: This remarkable Coastal Plain relative of A. cernuum was first discovered in 1981 by Steve Leonard in Pender County; it has since been found in similar sites in Onslow and Brunswick counties, always associated with other endemic species of primarily montane genera, such as Thalictrum cooleyi and Parnassia caroliniana
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Morphological, phenology, and habitat differences of these populations warrants acceptance of these populations as a narrowly endemic species in the "Allium cernuum" complex.
