Habitat: Bogs, marshes, seepages, cliffs and ledges where wet by seepage or spray from waterfalls, sometimes roadside ditches. Distribution: Widespread in ne. North America, south to w. NC, SC, e. and c. TN, and IN, and n. AR.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, long-petiolate, round to kidney-shaped, ¼-2¼ in. wide, notched at base, blunt-toothed, shiny and smooth.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in small (2-7 flowers), sessile clusters along the stem at the bases of petioles; white to greenish-white; less than 1/4 in. wide, consisting of 5 minute petals and 5 stamens.
Fruits: Fruit a flattened, ribbed, greenish-brown berry.
