Intro: Creeping to weakly erect, often colonial perennial found in bogs, marshes, seepages and cliffs and ledges that are wet from seepage or waterfall spray; sometimes in roadside ditches.

Stems: Stems slender, branched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, long-petiolate, round to kidney-shaped, ¼-2¼ in. wide, notched at base, blunt-toothed, shiny and smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in small (2-7 flowers), sessile clusters along the stem at the bases of petioles; white to greenish-white; less than 1/4 in. wide, consisting of 5 minute petals and 5 stamens.

Fruits: Fruit a flattened, ribbed, greenish-brown berry.
