Chloracantha spinosa (Bentham) Nesom. Common name: Spiny-aster, Mexican-devilweed, Devilweed-aster. Phenology: (May-) Aug-Nov. Habitat: Riverbanks, swamps, marshes, saline flats. Distribution: S. LA, OK, NM, AZ, and CA south to sc. Mexico (many states); other varieties occur in w. Mexico and southwards to Panama.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Sundberg (1991) delineated four varieties, three of which are distributed from Mexico southwards to Central America. Nesom (2018a) treated the complex as four species.
