Intro: Sprawling biennial/short-lived perennial found in sandhills, coastal dunes and other dry, sandy places.

Stems: Stems lying on ground but turning up and erect near tips, densely covered with long white hairs.

Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on stem, lance- to oblong-lance-shaped with blunt or rounded tips, to 4 in. long (reduced upward), densely covered with long white hairs.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) on stalks on turned up stem tips, 1 1/2-2 in. wide, consisting of 10-22 bright yellow ray florets encircling a central yellow disk of many tiny, tubular florets. Whorls of pointed, preen bracts, usually covered with white hairs (occasionally stalked glands, as in C. mariana), surround the base of each head.
