Coreopsis basalis (A. Dietrich) S.F. Blake. Common name: Texas Coreopsis. Phenology: May-Jul. Habitat: Sandy roadsides and fields. Distribution: Probably native only west of the Mississippi River (s. AR and s. OK south to se. LA and s. TX), now distributed across the Coastal Plain from TX east to FL and north to NC.

Stems: Stems vaguely ridged, branching.
Leaves: Leaves basal and opposite on stem, elliptic or oblong-lance when simple but most pinnately divided into 3-9 lance-shaped lobes 1-2 in. long, smooth.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) solitary on long stalks from leaf axils; heads about 1 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 8 yellow ray florets with a red-brown splotch at the base and unevenly toothed tip encircling a central disk of reddish-brown to purple, 5-lobed tubular florets; 2 distinctly different series of bracts surround the cup-shaped base of each head.
