Coreopsis grandiflora Hogg ex Sweet var. grandiflora. Common name: Large-flowered Coreopsis. Phenology: Late May-late Jun. Habitat: In thin soils of rock outcrops, especially granitic flatrock and granite domes. Distribution: Var. grandiflora ranges from c. GA and w. SC west to e. TX and e. OK, very scattered in distribution; it differs from var. harveyana in having the leaf divisions 2-6 mm wide (vs. 0.5-2 mm wide).

Intro: Erect perennial of thin soils on rock outcrops, especially granitic flatrocks.

Stems: Stems unbranched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate, the lower ones lance-shaped and undivided, the middle and upper ones to 3 in. long and pinnately divided into several narrow segments, the center one being broadest.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) solitary on naked, terminal stalks; heads 1 1/2-2 in. wide, consisting of 8 yellow ray florets with toothed tips encircling a dense center of yellow, 5-lobed disk florets; the base of the head is surrounded by 2 series of bracts, the inner straw-colored and the outer green.

Comments: A more commonly encountered variety of C. grandiflora (roadsides and other open, disturbed habitats) is var. harveyana; its leaf segments are narrower (less than 1/8 in.) than those of var. grandiflora (up to 1/4 in.). C. grandiflora var. saxicola ?????
