Stylisma patens (Desrousseaux) Myint. Common name: Common Dawnflower. Phenology: Jun-Aug. Habitat: Longleaf pine sandhills and other relatively dry sandy areas. Distribution: E. NC south to n. FL, and west to s. MS; reports from west of the Mississippi River are misidentifications.
ID notes: Overall, the most common and widespread taxon of the genus in our region, regularly encountered in its habitat.

Intro: Prostrate, herbaceous perennial vine of sandhills and other relatively dry sandy areas.
Stems: Stems slender, spreading across ground.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, short-petiolate to sessile, linear to narrowly elliptic, to 2 in. long, covered with short and close-pressed hairs.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers solitary on erect, slender stalks from leaf axils; white; 3/4 in. wide; funnel-shaped with 5 corolla lobes that are hairy on the outer surface and 5 also hairy, pale green much shorter calyx lobes. 2 short, dark green bracts subtend the calyx.
