Carex intumescens Rudge var. fernaldii L.H. Bailey. Common name: Fernald’s Bladder Sedge. Phenology: Jun-Jul. Habitat: Spruce-fir forests, northern hardwood forests, grassy balds. Distribution: NL (Newfoundland) west to MB, south to NY, n. PA, MI, MN, and, at higher elevations in the Appalachians, to w. VA, w. NC, and e. TN.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: See Medford, Poindexter, & Weakley (2021), Uttal (1971), and Reznicek & Ball (1974) for different views on the validity of this variety. It is here considered to warrant at least varietal rank.
