Horticultural Information

Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of bogs, seeps, seepage swamps, alluvial forests and shores of depression ponds and beaver ponds.

Stems: Stems 4-angled, with a few branches and also lateral, tuber-producing stolons; smooth or sparsely hairy.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, each pair at right angles to the pair above it; short-petiolate to subsessile; lance-shaped to oblong; 3/4-3 in. long; more or less toothed; hairy on veins beneath.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in small, dense, axillary heads, only 1--2 blooming at a time. Each flower white, less than ¼ in. long, short-tubular and opening to 5 spreading lobes. The light green, tubular, 5-lobed calyx is shorter than the corolla tube, and there are 2 slightly protruding stamens and a pistil.

Fruits: Fruit a set of 4 nutlets forming a square inside the persistent calyx; calyx lobes do not exceed the nutlets.
