Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of rocky or alluvial forests, rich cove forests and northern hardwood forests up to at least 5,000 feet elevation.

Stems: Stems 4-angled, branched above, usually densely covered with spreading hairs.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, long-petioled, lance-shaped to broadly oval and with pointed tips, 1 1/2-3 in. long, toothed, sparsely hairy above and hairy beneath.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in several dense, headlike clusters that are tiered along terminal spikes, each cluster resting on a whorl of green, fringed bracts; pale purple or white; about ½ in. long; bilaterally symmetric; with the tubular corolla split into 2 flaring lips, the upper one narrow and the lower 3-lobed and speckled with purple.The calyx is tubular with hairy teeth, and there are 2 long-protruding stamens.
