not marked as a favorite taxon Bryodesma tortipilum (A. Braun) Soják. Common name: Twisted-hair Spikemoss. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Rock outcrops, granite domes, especially at high elevations (but to 300 feet elevation in the Piedmont). Distribution: Endemic to the Southern Appalachians (rarely into the Piedmont, but sometimes locally abundant) of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Occurring close to Tennessee and Virginia; it should be sought there.
