Urtica chamaedryoides Pursh. Common name: Dwarf Stinging Nettle, Heartleaf Nettle, Ortiguilla. Phenology: Sep-May; Nov-Jul. Habitat: Rich moist soil, usually on floodplains. Distribution: West Virginia, Kentucky, se. Missouri and Oklahoma south to Florida, Texas, and s. Mexico; disjunct in South America (Argentina and Bolivia). This species is very rare east of the Blue Ridge; notable disjunct eastern locations include Stevens Creek (McCormick County, South Carolina), Congaree Swamp (Richland County, South Carolina), and various sites on very rich levees of the Roanoke River (North Carolina).

Other Comments: Gaddy & Rayner (1980) reported the common winter flowering of this species in our area.
