Viola lovelliana Brainerd. Section: Nosphinium. Subsection: Borealiamericanae. Common name: Lovell's Violet. Phenology: Mar-Apr. Habitat: Dry sandy soils under oak-pine woodlands and forested bluffs. Distribution: S. and w. AR to c. OK, south to se. LA and s.-c. TX (reports outside this region are misidentifications).
ID notes: A distinctive member of the Viola palmata group with puberulent foliage, eciliate calyx and less deeply divided leaf blades, frequently misidentified as V. palmata var. palmata; regionally endemic to the w. Gulf Region and adjacent areas.
