Viola tenuipes Pollard. Common name: Southern Wedge-leaf Violet. Phenology: Feb-Mar. Habitat: Rich dry to dry-mesic forests. Distribution: Sw. NC and c. TN south to c. SC, w. GA, FL Panhandle, and c. and nw. AL.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Resurrected from obscurity, preliminary study has demonstrated that this is distinct in a number of leaf features from the more northern V. glaberrima, occupies somewhat drier microsites, has a nearly allopatric distribution, and virtually never grows near the latter in the very small zone of sympatry. It is maintained as a distinct species here.
