Intro: Scapose perennial from clump of linear leaves, found in savannas, roadside ditches, pond margins and other wet habitats. Stem round and twisted below, straighter and flattened above.

Stems:

Leaves: Lustrous, broadly linear leaves to 20 in. long, tapered at both ends, with bumpy margins and red bases.

Inforescence: Flowers in short, oval to round, cone-like spike at top of stem, each bud concealed inside a single light-brown (with green center), scale-like bract.

Flowers: 1 to several yellow, 3-petaled flowers open at a time, usually in morning.
