Andersonglossum boreale (Fernald) Jim. Mejías, J.I.Cohen, & Naczi. Common name: Northern Hound's-tongue, Northern Wild Comfrey. Phenology: May-Jun. Habitat: Forests, roadsides. Distribution: NB west to BC, south to CT, NY, c. PA, n. OH, MI, and MN.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: Whether to recognize two taxa ("virginianum" and "boreale"), and if recognized, at what rank, has been controversial, but is resolved by Jiménez-Mejías, Cohen, & Naczi (2017). Cooperrider (1995) preferred varietal status for this taxon, stating that in OH there are numerous intermediates, while Voss (1996) and Rhoads & Klein (1993) maintained C. boreale at the species level. Haines (2010) added subspecific rank as an additional option. Andersonglossum boreale (Fernald) J.I. Cohen (Cohen 2015) was invalidly published (not accepted by its own author), but later validated (Fernald) Jim. Mejías, J.I. Cohen, & Naczi (Jiménez-Mejías, Cohen, & Naczi (2017).
