Horticultural Information
Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial found in rich, moist forests and grassy balds; sometimes forms sizable colonies on woodland borders.
Stems: Stems unbranched, mostly smooth.
Leaves: Leaves include a single, long-petiolate basal leaf and a whorl of petiolate stem leaves below the flower. Leaves to 3 in. long, divided into 3 oval to oblong, toothed, pointy-tipped leaflets (can appear to be 5 if lateral lobes are deeply incised), the center (terminal) leaflet broadest just above middle.

Flowers: Flower solitary on a slender, usually hairy stalk at top of stem, white (sometimes pink-tinged), about 1 in. wide, consisting of 5 (4--10) veiny, oval, petal-like sepals encircling a small, green compound ovary and many white stamens.
Fruits: Fruit a small cluster of minutely hairy achenes.
Comments: See the similar A. lancifolia.
