Asplenium curtissii L. Underwood. Common name: Curtiss’s Spleenwort. Phenology: Jan-Dec. Habitat: Moist, shaded limestone rocks. Distribution: Endemic in s. and c. peninsular FL.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: A. curtissii is a largely sterile hybrid (derived from hybridization of A. abscissum and A. verecundum, its chromosome complement symbolized AVV) forming large populations by vigorous vegetative reproduction and apogamous spore production; it also backcrossed with its parent A. abscissum to produce the species A. plenum. For these reasons it seems best to regard this taxon as a "species of hybrid origin" (without the “hybrid ×” in its name).
