not marked as a favorite taxon Carex garberi Fernald. Common name: Garber's Sedge, Elk Sedge. Phenology: Jun-Aug. Habitat: Sandy swales and calcareous gravel shores. Distribution: Newfoundland and Labrador (Labrador) west to Alaska, south to New York, nw. Pennsylvania, n. Ohio, nw. Indiana, ne. Illinois, n. Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and Oregon. In the northeastern United States, this taxon is at its southern limit within the Great Lakes region. It is only known from our area in Erie County, Pennsylvania (S. Grund, pers. comm., 2022). In this area of nw. Pennsylvania and adjacent areas of w. New York, Carex garberi is rare and grows atop calcareous rocks and escarpments associated with large rivers and other bodies of water, as well as in calcareous fens and similar seepages.
