Carex aureolensis Steudel. Section: [26uu] Section 34 Squarrosae. Common name: Southern Frank’s Sedge, Broad-scaled Sedge, Golden Cattail Sedge. Phenology: May-Jul. Habitat: Floodplain forests and marshes. Distribution: VA, KY, IL, and NE south to n. peninsular FL, Panhandle FL, TX, NM, COA, and NLE; South America.
ID notes: Recognizably different in gestalt from Carex frankii by its more rhizomatous habit and obviously smaller and less "bristly" spikelets (the pistillate scales often shorter than the spikelets, so fewer things "sticking out").
