Carex manhartii Bryson. Section: [26bb] Section 19 Laxiflorae. Blue Ridge Purple Sedge, Manhart's Sedge. Phen: Apr-May. Hab: Cove forests and montane oak-hickory forests, mostly at medium to fairly high elevations, especially over mafic rocks (such as amphibolite) and calcareous rocks (such as marble), but occurring on more acidic substrates as well. Dist: Endemic to s. WV, sw. VA, w. NC, nw. SC, ne. GA, and se. TN, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Once considered very rare, this species is now known to be locally common in portions of sw. NC and adjacent ne. GA. For more information on the VA occurrence, see Belden et al. (2004).

Taxonomy Comments: See Bryson (1985) for additional information. Chromosome number is reported as n=14 (Bryson (1985).
