Distribution: NS west to BC, south to MD, WV, s. OH, s. IN, s. IL, SD, n. NM, ID, and WA. Confusion in reporting of past records has obscured the distribution.

Taxonomy Comments: Carex echinodes (Fernald) P. Rothrock, Reznicek, & Hipp has sometimes been lumped into or treated as a variety of C. tenera, but warrants specific status.
