Carex scoparia Schkuhr ex Willdenow. Section: [26q] Section 12 Ovales. Common name: Broom Sedge. Phenology: May-Jun. Habitat: Bogs, swamp forests, marshes, seepy ledges, ditches. Distribution: NL (Newfoundland) west to BC, south to GA, MS, and CA.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: C. scoparia var. tesselata Fernald & Wiegand, endemic to NB and ME, was raised to species rank, as C. waponahkikensis M. Lovit & A.A. Haines (Lovit & Haines 2012); Lovit (2024) provided additional support for the recognition of C. waponahkikensis at species rank. Tennessee Flora Committee (2015) mentions unresolved variation that may warrant taxonomic recognition.
