Carex woodii Dewey. Section: [26aa] Section 18 Paniceae. Wood's Sedge. Phen: May-Jun. Hab: Moist slopes and cove forests over mafic rocks (such as amphibolite), ultramafic rocks (such as olivine), or felsic rocks. Dist: NY west to MB, south to NC, nw. SC (Gaddy et al. 1984), n. GA, and MO.

ID notes: This species forms clonal patches reminiscent of C. pensylvanica, but has perigynia glabrous and filled by the achene at maturity; the foliage also has a paler green cast and the patches are looser. It has probably been much overlooked in the past.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Naczi (1999b) reported chromosome numbers of n = 22, 26.
