Chimaphila umbellata (Linnaeus) W.P.C. Barton var. cisatlantica S.F. Blake. Common name: Prince's-pine. Phenology: May-Jun; Jul-Oct. Habitat: Forests and woodlands, mostly rather xeric and acid. Distribution: The species is circumboreal, extending south into Central America; var. cisatlantica is widespread in ne. North America, from NS and QC west to MN, south to NC, w. SC, and IN.

Horticultural Information
Intro: Short, erect evergreen perennial found in dry, acidic forests and woodlands.
Stems: Stems semi-woody, pinkish above the leaves, smooth.
Leaves: Leaves alternate to whorled, short-petiolate, oblong-lance-shaped, to 4 in. long, sharply toothed, leathery and solidly glossy green.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers 4-8 on short, nodding stalks branched from the top of the pinkish stem; waxy-pink to whitish, about 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 5 spreading, concave petals surrounding a prominent green ovary and 10 stamens.
Fruits: Fruit a ribbed, round capsule on an erect to recurved stalk.
Comments: Distinguished from C. maculata by the leaves, which are not variegated and are broadest above the middle.
