Cyperus tetragonus Elliott. Common name: Four-angled Flatsedge. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Maritime forests and dunes, edges of brackish marshes. Distribution: E. NC south to s. FL and FL Panhandle. Reports of the species in s. AL (Woods, Diamond, & Burkhalter 2016) are based on specimens of C. thyrsiflorus.

ID notes: This species is easy to recognize in the field by its narrowly and very loosely cylindric spikes with relatively short, ellipsoid spikelets.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: C. pringlei of AZ, NM, and n. Mexico has sometimes been treated as conspecific (as by FNA), but it should be regarded as distinct or as a synonym of C. mutisii .
