Cyperus virens Michaux. Phenology: May-Nov. Habitat: Marshes and ditches. Distribution: E. NC south to c. peninsular FL, west to TX; Mexico to Argentina. Also as a chrome ore waif in VA.

ID notes: Easily identified in the field by its triquetrous culms with abundant retrorse prickles on the angles (sharp enough to slice open a finger moved up the stem, a hazard when collecting voucher specimens); other species in sect. Luzuloidei are mostly bluntly and obscurely trigonous.
