Desmodium marilandicum (Linnaeus) A.P. de Candolle. Common name: Maryland Tick-trefoil. Phenology: Jun-Sep; Aug-Oct. Habitat: Fields, woodland borders, disturbed areas. Distribution: MA west to MI and MO, south to n. peninsular FL and TX.

Stems: Stems unbranched, smooth or sparsely hairy.

Leaves: Leaves alternate; on long petioles with short, linear stipules at the base; divided into 3 oval to nearly round leaflets, each 1/2-1 1/2 in. long and darker green and smooth above and pale and mostly smooth beneath.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers on long stalks in loose racemes, pink, 1/4 in. long, bilaterally symmetric and with typical pea-flower shape.

Fruits: Fruit a flattened pod with constrictions between 2-4 seeds, covered with hooked hairs that stick to clothing and fur.
