*Dryopteris filix-mas (Linnaeus) Schott ssp. filix-mas . Common name: European Male Fern. Phenology: Late Jun-early Sep. Habitat: Scoured streambanks in suburban areas. Distribution: Native of n. Europe. Reported (as D. filix-mas) as naturalizing in suburban VA (Arlington County and City of Alexandria) (Simmons et al. (2020).

Origin/Endemic status: Europe

Taxonomy Comments: The identity of these plants within the Dryopteris filix-mas complex is uncertain and speculative; they are placed here for now, provisionally.

Synonymy : = Can, K4, NS, POWO; Polypodium filix-mas L.; < Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott — C, F, FNA2, G, Montgomery & Paulton (1981). Basionym: Polypodium filix-mas L. 1753
