*Echinochloa crus-galli (Linnaeus) Palisot de Beauvois ssp. utilis (Ohwi & Yabuno) T. Koyama. Common name: Japanese Millet. Habitat: Cultivated, and as a waif. Distribution: Native of Japan.

Taxonomy Comments: Long thought to be derived from domesticated plants of E. crus-galli before 4.0 kyBP in Japan (Crawford 2011), E. esculenta appears to differ in having persistent grains in maturity, plumply ovate spikelets, and incurved inflorescence branches (Chen and Phillips 2007), although see Banfi and Galasso (2021).
