Eleocharis ovata (Roth) Roemer & J.A. Schultes. Subgenus: Eleocharis. Section: Eleogenus. Series: Ovatae. Phenology: Jun-Oct. Habitat: Freshwater drying shores, lake and stream beds, bogs, tidal estuarine shores, disturbed areas. Distribution: NL (Labrador), ON, and MN south to NJ, MD, DE, PA, VA, KY, MO, and OK; scattered in w. United States. Also known from one collection in MS (see comments below). Reported for VA in FNA; documentation needing verification. drawdowns (Yalobusha County; C. Bryson 23021; VSU), examined by both Richard Carter and Scott Ward. Known from one collection in MS along Enid Lake mud flat.

ID notes: Refer to Larson and Catling (1996) for an in-depth discussion on the differences between Eleocharis ovata and Eleocharis obtusa; these differences could be further tested throughout the mid-Atlantic.
