Eleocharis

Eleocharis tenuis (Willdenow) J.A. Schultes var. tenuis. Common name: Slender Spikerush, Kill-cow. Phenology: Jun-Sep. Habitat: Bogs, marshes. Distribution: NS and QC south to NC and s. AL (?).

Glossary (beta!)

Subgenus: Eleocharis. Section: Eleocharis. Series: Eleocharis. Subseries: Truncatae.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: See Gibbons & McMullen (2019) for detailed discussion of the E. tenuis complex.

Other Comments: Duncan 16842 appears to have been the only specimen of E. tenuis var. tenuis from Georgia, but that specimen is Eleocharis brittonii (SGW; personal annotation). The single specimen from AL seems suspect, given the higher prevalence of Eleocharis verrucosa in the Gulf states; the specimen was apparently annotated by S.G. Smith in 2000 as E. tenuis var. verrucosa, but later annotated to E. tenuis var. tenuis by Gibbons. I have not seen the physical specimen (S. Ward). This species is otherwise virtually absent from the western and southern portions in the range of the entire complex. See page 75 of Gibbons and McMullen (2019) for their distribution map.
