Eleocharis bicolor Chapman. Phen: Jun-Nov. Hab: Moist sites, wet pine savannas. Dist: AL and GA west to LA; West Indies; Nicaragua.
ID notes: Occasionally E. bicolor will have complete transverse septae which are apparently prominent when plants are growing aquatically; but these culms are very diminutive (0.1-0.3 mm wide) and the spikelets are noticeably wider than culms, which differs markedly than the wider, obviously septate culms of those species in subgenus Limnochloa otherwise keyed in Key section B; thus, this taxon is keyed in section E. This taxon can be told from E. minima by the lower number of floral scales per mm, its biconvex achenes, and its lack of proliferous spikelets. Eleocharis bicolor can sometimes have culms with complete septae when plants are growing aquatically, but it is uncertain whether these forms typically bear reproductive culms.
