Erysimum capitatum (Douglas ex W.J. Hooker) Greene var. capitatum. Common name: Western Wallflower. Phenology: Apr-Jul; Jun-Aug. Habitat: Shale barrens and shale woodlands, limestone bluffs and calcareous rocky woodlands. Distribution: Montana and British Columbia south to w. Texas, California, and Mexico; disjunct eastwards in Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Illinois, etc. Though most floras (including C, F, and G) state or give the impression that Erysimum is not native east of Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas ("rarely adventive farther east along railroads"), this taxon is native and relictual in w. Virginia (Alleghany and Bath counties), e. West Virginia (Grant and Pendleton counties), ec. Tennessee (Chester, Wofford, & Kral 1997), and c. Kentucky (Campbell 2013).

Taxonomy Comments: Rollins (1993) interpreted E. capitatum as including five varieties, all but the typic restricted to the Great Plains and west. Alternative treatments recognize a single entity or various numbers of species or infraspecific taxa. Al-Shehbaz (2010a) and POWO (2025) recognize two varieties: ours and var. purshii.
